Safe Routes to School

Recognizing the health and environmental benefits of walking and biking to school, Congress passed legislation in 2005 that established the National Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The goal was to make walking and bike routes more safe and to encourage children and their parents to use those modes to get to and from school. WCOG assisted Mountain View Elementary School in Ferndale and Alderwood Elementary School in Bellingham to establish and operate successful Safe Routes to School programs.

Neighborhood Smart Trips

Neighborhood Smart Trips was a very successful Individualized Marketing campaign in 2008, targeting one-third of Bellingham households by letter and phone, and by going door to door. The technique creates a dialogue with people who express interest in walking, bicycling and riding the bus, and leads to durable behavior change by engaging participants in their own learning process.
