Original Cascade Gateway Border Data Warehouse Project

Project status: Completed

The original border wait time archive project captured data coming from the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and WA State Department of Transportation Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and provided the data in an online archive accessible to the public.

Location

The project included software development and online services, but includes data from the four primary land ports-of-entry between the Lower Mainland of British Columbia and Whatcom County, Washington (Peace Arch/Douglas, Pacific Highway, Lynden/Aldergrove, and Sumas/Abbotsford-Huntingdon ports).

Why this project was needed

While both BC Ministry of Transportation and WA State Department of Transportation established border traveler ATIS systems in the early 2000s, neither system archived system data. Stakeholders recognized the value of historic border volume and wait time data in both project planning and performance measurements.

Results

The project developed a schema-based standard for organizing the traffic data coming in from two systems, compiled a GPS inventory of state and provincial ATIS system components, and developed an online archive accessible at: CascadeGatewayData.com.

Project funding

The cost of the project was $220,000 (USD). Funding was provided by a partnership of agencies:

  • Transport Canada

  • WA State Department of Transportation

  • B.C. Ministry of Transportation & Transit
