Regional Travel Demand Model

In its capacity as the metropolitan planning organization for the Bellingham-Ferndale  Urbanized Area, the Whatcom Council of Governments has developed and maintains a Regional Travel Demand Model.  The Model simulates automobile and truck flows on regional highways and forecasts future demand using a four-step process that addresses trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice and route assignment.

The Model is an essential analytical tool for both metropolitan and regional transportation planning.  It is used to develop multiple travel-demand scenarios reflecting differing transportation networks and/or land use patterns that compare factors such as vehicle miles traveled, vehicle hours of travel, traffic volumes and travel times.  In addition, the outputs from the Model can be used for further analysis with other tools such as traffic operations and air quality models.
